Summery of Celia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Summery of Celia - Essay Example The main character of the narrative is Celia, who is a black slave and is a victim as the story unfolds at each stage (McLaurin.). The theme of enslavement is as put forward by the American constitution then. The constitution saw it right to enslave people, and the irregularity was popular in the south. However, the north did not pursue the slavery institution in the various economic as well as the political endeavors. The story depicts a man who faces the demise of his wife and later on gives in to his sexual desires. The man chooses slavery as a way of fulfilling his desires. Celia is thus the unlucky girl, and she becomes an asset to the man at the age of fourteen years. She did not survive the test of time, and she tends to believe she is born for the fulfillment of the man. His master, Newsom, treats her as a sexual object. Celia bears two children for Newsom. After five years of unbearable life in the homestead, she finds a lover by the name of George. Due to their relationship, she tends to go to her master to end their sexual contract. The effort is unsuccessful. Due to the harassment, she kills her master and is taken to court to answer the charges. The enslavement institution tampers with her proceedings in court before the jury. It is due to the fact she is not able to defend herself in court. She is not given the capacity to narrate the numerous incidents that she experiences with her former master. The right of defending herself in court was as per the American constitution, but the granting of the opportunity was impossible since she was a slave. The narrative articulates that the Negroes in America were the main race that was suitable for enslavement. The Atlantic slave trade was a major boost for the racial discrimination. The story also puts forward that court proceedings and rulings did not recognize blacks as

Animalia Vertebrata Mammalia Carnivora Canidae Canis Lupus And Animal :: essays research papers

ANIMALIA VERTEBRATA MAMMALIA CARNIVORA CANIDAE CANIS LUPUS AND ANIMALIA VERTEBRATA MAMMALIA CARNIVORA CANIDAE CANIS NIGER Introduction: Any person who has been able to catch a glimpse of any type of wolf is indeed a lucky man. The wolf is one of the earth's most cowardly and fearful animals, and it is so sly and, pardon the expression, foxy, that it is almost a waste of time to try and catch him in any kind of trap. Although he can be cowardly and fearful, he can also be one the most vicious and blood-thirsty of all animals. Often, they simply kill as much prey as is possible, regardless of hunger and appetite. This is done by "hamstringing" their prey. This leaves them helpless and unable to move. Then the wolf pack can eat and tear him apart at their own will. Although savage and bloodthirsty, wolves are among some of the world's smartest and most perceptive mammals. Where found: Wolves are found all over the world, and on almost every major continent of the earth. The following wolves are types of Gray Wolves (Canis lupus). In eastern Europe the European Wolf (Canis lupus lupus) can be found even though it used to roam most of western Europe as well. In Spain, two wolves have also been identified-Canis lupus deitanus and Canis lupus signatus. While the first is similar to many of the other European wolves, the latter may be more closely related to the jackal (Canis aureus), than to a wolf. The Caucasion Wolf (Canis lupus cubanensis) is found in many parts of eastern Europe and western Asia. The large tundra wolf of eastern Asia, the Tundra or Turukhan Wolf (Canis lupus albus), is very close in relations to the wolves of northern Alaska. In the Arctic Islands and Greenland the Melville Island Wolf (Canis lupus arctos), the Banks Island Wolf (Canis lupus bernardi), the Baffin Island Wolf (Canis lupus manningi), and the Greenland wolf (Canis lupus orion), are all found. Wolves of the Continental Tundra and Newfoundland include the Alaska Tundra Wolf (Canis lupus tundrarum), the Interior Alaska Wolf (Canis lupus pambasileur), the Kenai Peninsula Wolf (Canis lupus alces), the Mackenzie Tundra Wolf (Canis lupus mackenzii), the Mackenzie Valley Wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), the Hudson Bay Wolf (Canis lupus hudsonicus), the Labrador Wolf (Canis lupus labradorius), and the Newfoundland Wolf (Canis lupus beothicus). However, the Newfoundland wolf has seemed to become extinct. This is strange because there is no evidence of them being intensely hunted by man, of extreme habitat changes, or of lack of food and yet in the early 1900s they became extinct. The wolves of the Western Mountains and Coast of North America include

Human Memory Model Essay

What is the Human Memory Model? Do you know where your thoughts and memories go? We are going to look at the three different memory types. What makes them up and how they function. Developing short and long term memories is something that is a long term project. We do not fill our cerebral cortex with all the knowledge and memories overnight. In this paper we are going to look at the human memory model. What makes us process thoughts into memories, process things we see, hear, feel, taste and smell into memories. We are going to look at short term memory, long term memory and sensory memory types. These different types of memory models make up the structural and functional model of memory. First we look at sensory memory this is like the safety deposit box of the memory bank. Sensory memory is the processing of brief sensations that occur through the five senses. They are briefly stored in your short term memory bank. If you enter a room that has a not so pleasant smell your brain is processing this in your short term memory. You may remember the room itself, but not necessarily the smell. Sensory memory only sticks around while the stimulus is also around. Certain instances can help recall the memories like an emotional memory, the stronger the emotion, the stronger the memory. Short term memory is also referred to as working memory, the combination of transient sensory memory and extensive long term memory. New material comes in and mashes with the old information, and is managed as a working process. Not all short term thoughts get put into our long term memory vault. Some methods of retaining information are called chunking. We process letters, numbers and thoughts by grouping into chunks of seven. Phone numbers are a good example of this, two groups of three digits and one group of four digits. Maybe this is why phone numbers are formatted this way, so we can remember so many different sets of phone numbers. If you make a call one time, you may not remember that number ever again. But placing this call multiple times will store the digits in your long term memory bank. (Editorial Board, 2011 p. g. 124) With this we move right into long term memory, long term memory is something we need to work at day after day. If you are trying to study for a test, it is best to study a little bit at a time every day, cramming is not recommended. You are not supplying your brain enough repetition to store information in your long term memory bank. This method of learning has been proven over time in many ways. Episodic memories are something you experience or an event in your life. Semantic memories are items of memory that you learned at some point in your life. Items that are told to you or you read about. Learning with your semantic memory still requires repetition for it to be stored in your long term memory bank. You must listen to someone speak and understand what they are saying before you will remember it. You cannot simply just stare at them and hear what they are saying. Your undivided attention is required. Explicit and Implicit memories are described as bringing information forward for recall. Implicit memory is brought forward automatically without intentional conscious recall. Whereas, explicit memories are brought forth through conscious recall. You use explicit memories to remember family and friends birthdays or mundane information that you learned in grade school. You need to recall this information to bring it back to the surface; where implicit memories are the ones that we never forget like riding a bike or driving a car. Retrospective memory is items of information that have already been presented and stored in the long term memory bank. Prospective memory is future information such as a grocery store list without writing the needed items down. Without making the list, you could walk into the grocery store and ask yourself, â€Å"why am I here†? But with retrospective memory you could recall that your kids ran out of milk at breakfast and not everyone could have cereal. So now you remember that your list included milk. Prospective emory may spark your memory for other items that you need to get. Encoding is the initial process of recording and identifying information. Three types of codes help to make memories acoustic, visual and semantic. Acoustic code is sound, some sounds recall memories. The sound of the ocean might give you a joyful memory of your childhood. There are also sounds that might bring up bad memories, like a gun shot. When thinking of a gunshot you recall a traumatic experience where two law enforcement officers are trying to apprehend a suspect. When you arrive they are all three wrestling on the ground. Now that the law enforcement officers are fighting and shouting at the suspect, you have to try to remember who is saying what and who pulls their gun out first. Then the gunshot happens and suddenly your mind goes blank. When other officers arrive you are expected to recall what has just happened and make a statement. However, the situation was so traumatizing that you only remember two details of the scene. Visual memories are much the same, as when you see the space where this event took place you are remembering the details of the event some years later. Semantic memories understand the relationship between signifiers such as words, phrases, signs and symbols. This is what you would learn while attending school and living in mainstream America. You brain stores all of this information like a flash drive, when you want to restore this information you simply full the file and remember. (LeMee & Shaw, 1997) (Editorial Board, 2011 p. g. 121) Now where do you think all of these memories go? They must all be stored somewhere right? Of course, the information is stored in the limbric system, which includes the hippocampus and the amygdala. The hippocampus is responsible for transferring the short term memory into long term memories. The amygdala is responsible for linking emotions and memories. The hippocampus acts as the neurological message system, passing along information from long term storage in the cerebral cortex. Different parts of the hippocampus are thought to be involved in different activities, such as consolidation of spatial memories. The amygdala provides a means of retrieval by pairing emotions in an event with the memory of the event. The hippocampus and amygdala are very important functions in the brain they are certainly not the only functions. (Editorial Board, 2011 p. g. 119) The brain is a very complex organ. It is the most important organ besides the heart in the human body. Without the brain, your quality of life would be awful. Brain injuries are all too common where a hit to the head in just the right place can take away all your short term memory. This could leave you with the ability to not retain any new memories. You should always protect your brain, especially the cerebral cortex which stores all your memories.

Everybodys eyes turn towards a young sixth grade boy, who was praying that his computer did not shatter on the floor. Suddenly he picks it up with disappointment in his eyes, and walks to the media center. Now that technology is more popular in schools, there are many flaws about it. Bright light is not good to wake up to or go to sleep just seeing. This is not good for students eyes, brains, or their sleep. Luckily, There are many ways that teens are able to get more sleep before they are too tired to even try and fix the problem. One of the worst problems that teens need to fix to get the desired sleep time is to turn off their phone and school electronics off earlier before bed. Most teens are up for hours on end, playing games and watching videos way after they should be asleep. Reiley Lesyk took a poll of her classmates sleep. For then 30% of her classmates get 6 or less hours of sleep every night. An option to fix this is to put it down 30 minutes before bed so they can go to bed easier. Life of a Prosecutor - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 7 Words: 2022 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Law Essay Type Review Did you like this example? Life of a Prosecutor A prosecutor is a type of lawyer that could be federal, state, or just local. They represent the government in all types of court cases. The main job of a prosecutor is to be able to provide research, and have investigative skills to bring to the court room. A prosecutor must be able to handle a very large amount of stress and possibly some emotional difficulties. This job may also come with tiring nights and a lot of work to be done in a short period of time. When looking at a job as a prosecutor one must take in the many factors and responsibilities associated with this career path (Tronshaw, 2014). With choosing this as your career comes quite a bit of extraneous school work. After graduating high school you must attend either a two year or four year college. Eventually working to get your bachelors. Although it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t matter what you get your bachelors in, its highly looked upon that you obtain a degree in either cr iminal justice or public administration. The most important thing to do is to get college credits that will transfer over to either the next school your transferring to, or more importantly, law school (Tronshaw, 2014). You must attend a school accredited by the American Bar Association. While in whatever law school you choose to go too, there will be many types of classes youll be required to take. A few of these classes are things such as; Property Law, Legal Writing, and Interactive Activities. Interactive Activities are a very important part of becoming a powerful prosecutor because it gives you an early chance to learn how the system works and what kinds of listening or verbal skills youre going to need. Moot Court Competitions are a great way to get interactive in an early stage. A Moot court is a stimulated court where they will draft briefs. This will make you feel more comfortable when you have to go in front of the court room. Another very good interactive activity is t he legal clinics. The clinics are basically just practice trials for law students after their first semester (Tronshaw, 2014). Now, before even being able to take the bar test after law school you must take an exam called the MPRE (Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam). This test is basically used to see if youre mentally competent and aware of the responsibility youre about to take on. This test will ask you questions based on disciplinary rules, the codes of conduct and some of the questions will see if you can lead state and federal cases (Tronshaw, 2014). Now, after completing this exam and passing, you must take the Bar Exam. The Bar exam is an extensive, 12 hour exam split up into two days. This exam covers all types of state and federal laws. This test is offered the last Tuesday and Wednesday of each February and July. The first part of this test is specific to NY. There are five essay questions, 50 multiple choice and an MPT. You must sit in a room for a total of 6 hours with a 45 minute break for lunch. The first half of this day youre going to have to complete 3 essay questions and all 50 multiple choice questions. After returning from your lunch break you then will have to complete the remaining two essay questions and also the MPT. The MPT will take up 90 minutes of the remaining three hours to test you on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“legal analysis, fact analysis, problem solving, resolution of ethical dilemmas, organization and management of a lawyering task, and communication(THE NYS BAR EXAM, n.d.). Finally on the last day you will have 200 multiple choice questions split up into 100 question increments. This test will cost you a whopping 250.00 every time you have to take it (THE NYS BAR EXAM, n.d.). Either while youre in school, or after you get out there is plenty of internship opportunities. Most internships are done during school though. There is roughly 800 internships in the US during the academic year and 1000 internships during the summer (Organization, Mission Functions Manual: Attorney General, Deputy and Associate | DOJ | Department of Justice, n.d.). This is a great thing and it is so beneficial to young students that really want to get their foot in the door. This can help many students and aspiring prosecutors to see what ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like first hand and to gain court room experience. Many of these internships even turn into course credits! But, in order to apply for an internship one must go to each individual office and see what they need or how it works (Organization, Mission Functions Manual: Attorney General, Deputy and Associate | DOJ | Department of Justice, n.d.). If youre lucky, you can get an internship that pays you as well. There is an internship program called SLIP (Summer Law Internship Program). There is very competitive recruitment but, what you get to learn and experience is worth it and thats why. The best thing about this program is you get to watch how the Department of Ju stice runs first hand. This opportunity is very diverse, interesting and they accept students from many different law schools. This particular internship has taken mostly students in their second and third year of law school. In order to apply you must have at least one full semester completed. SLIP looks for students who have shown commitment to government services, academic achievement, Moot court experience and extracurricular activities (Organization, Mission Functions Manual: Attorney General, Deputy and Associate | DOJ | Department of Justice, n.d.). After going through all that schooling, and hopefully some internships youre most likely going to be able to start working. Before even applying for any prosecutor jobs, one must make sure they have every single acquired skill in order to be a proficient prosecutor. As a prosecutor you must be there to serve justice, not just throw people in jail whenever you feel like it. Another thing is, when youre in the court room, you ha ve to look at the case as a whole and enjoy the process of trial. Listening skills and talking skills are essentials in becoming a prosecutor, especially when you have to really look in-between the lines of what someone is saying (D.A. Confidential: What makes a good prosecutor?, 2009). Be sure to take in the account of your future. Once youre a prosecutor and youve gone through a few cases donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get cocky and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even think about falling back on your work ethic. Both of those could really hurt your reputation, which is something you always have to think about. On top of hurting your reputation, one slip up, or missed document could send a criminal back on the street where someone else will be hurt because of your mistake. That is something no one ever wants to live with. There are many different types of prosecutors in the criminal justice system. The lowest type of prosecutor is the District Attorney. He/she deals with it all from big too sma ll (felonies to misdemeanors). The District attorney gathers all the research, put criminals in jail, talk to the victims and process having a life. A little higher up on the prosecutor scale is the independent counsels. This men and women work closely with the high government officials, stemming from cocaine use to perjury by the president. The independent counsel promises public confidence while these well-known people are going through investigations and trials. Some independent counsels have been criticized for taking a lot of time, spending a lot of money, and getting into criminalizing things other prosecutors wouldnt do. The highest type of prosecutor you could be, next to an Attorney General, is the US Attorney. They oversee administrators and handle the bulk of the work that the Attorney Generals would typically do. U.S. attorney general, who is the chief law enforcement officer in the United States and the head of the Department of Justice, has responsibility over U.S. att orneys. The 94 U.S. attorneys and nearly 2,000 assistant federal prosecutors intently investigate violations of federal laws, such as whiteÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ collar crime, drug trafficking, and public corruption (Types of Prosecutors, 2014). District Attorneys have a lot on their plates at all times. DAs work really long- extended hours, late nights, and weekends. They spend roughly 100 hours per murder case, 8 hours for non-homicide and 3 for juvenile crimes. A lot of the time prosecutors do have enough time to manage their cases but last minute pre-trial motions and or negotiations make that difficult. The days before trial are really hard though. These days consist of a lot of over time, making constant phone calls and making sure everything is ready. During busy times at the court house a prosecutor can be put on call in case they need them for something such as talking to a police officer, needing to watch a crime scene. Another important thing a prosecutor may be on call for is to get a search or arrest warrant during non-working hours (Reid, 2014). A day in the life as a district attorney is very busy and hectic. They can constantly hold feelings of fear and failure or emotional stress around the time of all types of trials. There is no such thing as a normal day when youre a prosecutor. Theres a million different things you could be doing with 1,000 different types of cases. In a normal day at work in NYC you would have to prepare for grand jury right when you got there, worked real hard the day before to make sure that you have all things associated with getting the suspect indicted. Theres usually a morning meeting or some type of conference you need to go too. Down in NYC they can have around 400 attorneys hired at once and with each one of them having about 100 cases. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s impossible for each attorney to stand on every case alone so once a month there is a meeting held to go over everyones cases (Honowitz, 2012). By reading these blogs it shows a clear example of how stressful a day in the court house can get especially with more than one case going on. The stress pays off with the money you make. In order to retire comfortable the average prosecutor will work about 30-40 years. This table below shows the different types of salaries for each type of prosecutors for New York City: Federal: $93,000 Criminal: $98,000 County: $96,000 Public: $87,200 An average prosecutor in NYC will start at roughly $60,000 but they can get up to $130,000 (Prosecutor Salary in New York, NY Prosecutor Salary, n.d.). Overall I believe that this would be a very ideal job for me. I really like this career path because ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s something that you really have to work for. Also, I like that even though what you do each day may be very similar each case is different and can have different outcomes. A prosecutor has many different tasks and responsibilities to keep in mind. I hope that one day I will be out in this field helping out the criminal justice system. References D.A.
